For a while I've been keeping my eyes open for examples of the Crystolac toughened tumblers made by Davidson from c. 1940 onwards. So far I have three, in two sizes and two designs, all with different date codes.
If anyone is a watcher of the BBC TV series Call the Midwife, in episode 3 of the current series (series 5) set in 1961 I spotted what appeared to be a toughened tumbler being used.

In previous series (set in the 1950s) they had a Sowerby water set in use in Nonnatus House at mealtimes... I love to see genuine items being used in these shows. I have the jug in amber and the tumblers in an ice blue (so far!)

Please note that we are doing a server migration on 30/9/2014 - 1/10/2014 so you will not
be able to reach the board for around 4 hours from midnight GMT.

Please bookmark this blog post as it will carry any updates to the process.

Ta!
Anne,
GMB Tech Support Manager

Update #1:
There appears to be an issue with the migration - please don't panic - we have a database backup from just before the process began... I'm leaving things until the engineers have completed their tasks before I deal with the errors.

Update #2:
Well, after the engineers have finished, all the sites work EXCEPT the GMB, which is interesting. I'm poking the server with a stick to see why not... watch this space!

Update #3:
There are still issues with the new server setup which the hosting company are attempting to resolve. This may take a wee bit of time, so please be patient. The board will be back as soon as possible.

Update #4:
The board is back online. If anyone experiences any oddities please flag them up via Report to Moderator or by emailing me directly. Now for some sleep! :)
This is such a fascinating area for glass collectors, and the intro book gives a oversight of lampworkers in London, explaining how what lampwork is, who made it and how they came to be in London.
The trilogy will cover three main lampworkers: Bimini, Pirelli, and Komaromy.

The introductory volume is also now available in paperback format - see new link added below.

You can find Angela's introductory volume on sale in the Amazon Kindle store - click the link below to go straight there:
The internet is a great resource for knowledge, but it's also a way of spreading bad info, wrong info and rubbish very easily.

Some of the myths relating to glass go along the lines of:

If it has a polished pontil mark it musty be Whitefriars. That's just not true, as many makers output has such polished pontil marks.

A ground base dates a piece to the 1930s. This isn't true either, ground bases appear on pieces of all ages!

But the most misleading myth I've seen of late was on a website where it was stated, "The bottom of your new piece of glass will, in nearly every case, offer you some kind of mark or another." Now I don't know the exact statistics, but I do know that this is so far from being true as to merit the status of a glass myth extraordinaire! I have thousands (yes, thousands!) of pieces of glass and a very small percentage of them carry a mark of any kind. I'd estimate less than 10% of my collection is marked in any way. There are makers who claim to mark every piece, and perhaps some do, but I have unmarked examples from some of those who claimed they did, but clearly didn't!

So, if your glass isn't marked, don't be surprised, it's not as uncommon as you might think. There are resources available to help you identify your glass, the Glass Message Board is full of lovely folks who have a wealth of knowledge, and are willing to share it. There are also sites with reference collections of labels and marks - you'll find links to them in my links section in the side panel of the blog.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524460621148431543.post-74995043818836290372012-01-24T01:48:00.000+00:002012-01-24T01:48:45.605+00:00Great excitement today!
Frank runs the Glass Zoo, where he collects info and photos of all sorts of animals and figures made from glass; and he also runs the Glass Study, where he is digitising and sharing a huge amount of material from his own and other collections. The material includes catalogues, articles, advertisements and much much more and a subscription gives you unlimited access for the period of the subscription.

Subscriptions for the Glass Zoo are just €10 for 2 years, whilst the Glass Study is a little more at €30 per year, but both are far outweighed by access to some of the most amazing glass information available online.

And the collection is growing all the time, so you actually get more for your money as the year passes... you can't say the same about a box of chocolates now, can you?!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6524460621148431543.post-17300494138303419252011-07-16T14:01:00.000+01:002011-07-16T14:01:32.459+01:00Stolen motor bike: Yamaha YBR reg: NK58 DFOPLEA FOR HELP FROM A TWITTER CONTACT OF MINE: Please look out for motorbike Yamaha YBR Reg: NK58 DFO stolen Thursday 14 July from @Dannyboy_37 in Dipton near Consett - please circulate the details to help raise awareness.
I'm making a plea for help! Help Burton Memorial Hall in Burton-in-Kendal, south Cumbria, is 1 of the final 6 projects in the 2011 Jubilee People's Millions contest in the Border TV region. The contest will be determined by public telephone vote on Tuesday 28 June 2011 (a bit like X-Factor for community groups!) and the Hall is going head to head with another project in the north west of Cumbria - and the project with the most telephone votes on the day will win.

The Hall (which is a registered charity and raises all its own revenue from room rentals and fundraising events) needs a lot of work doing to it: building a new toilet block for very small kids who currently can't reach the adult loos or washbasins, replacing the cracked concrete play surface with some jolly coloured softer surfacing, replacing the heating boiler that is so old (and unreliable) that no-one can remember when it was installed!, and installing better lights so our table tennis teams can compete properly to national competition standards and our drama and music groups can have some stage lighting instead of striplights! The total cost is just shy of £100,000 of work needed for this phase of restoration of our old but much-loved and well-used village hall - we're hoping to win the vote on the night for £60,000 from the Jubilee People's Millions fund (the rest comes from Hall reserves and a legacy of £20,000 left us by one of the Hall's founders.)

I'm asking for the support for the Hall's entry Kosy Komfy Kidz by voting for us on the day and by spreading the word through your contacts and networks to ask for others to support them too. All it takes is one call any-time between 9am and 12 midnight on Tuesday 28 June at a cost of 11p per call (BT landline rate) to the number which will be published on our JPM web-page: http://www.peoplesmillions.org.uk/2011-finalists/border/kosy-komfy-kidz and in the Daily Mirror on Tuesday 28 June 2011. Every vote for the project will be vital and anyone can vote (up to 10 times from the same number if you'd like to! girl cheer but just one vote would help!!!), you don't need to be local to south Cumbria or even the Border TV area in order to vote. I'll add the number here too as soon as I have it on Tuesday morning.

The Hall is vital to the village of Burton-in-Kendal, it really is a community hub and is busy every day of the week with activities for all ages and interests, but Burton is only a small community so if you can help us along by voting just once on the day you would be doing us a great service and earn the gratitude of all those involved in the project. Please help us if you can and spread the word to anyone and everyone who might help us also. Thank you!

SE21 (the Glass and Ceramics Fair) is to be held at Dulwich College, Dulwich Common, London in the light-filled modernist setting of the Christison Hall on Sunday 3rd April 2011.

This event represents a new concept in specialist fairs, bringing together antique and contemporary glass with ceramics from both the secondary market and directly from the artists themselves.

With a balanced mix of both disciplines, and with the emphasis on quality and design, SE21 will be the destination of choice for those interested in sourcing unusual and desirable items to complete their décor and collections.

Visitors will be able to browse all types of decorative and collectable glass and ceramics; from Powell to Poole, Mdina to Moorcroft and Lalique to Fat Lava.

You will find glass specialists exhibiting 18th century drinking glasses, stylish Scandinavian, Italian and British art glass, as well as antique continental glass by makers such as Gallé and Lalique. Ceramics will be well represented by trusted quality experts, offering items from the 18th century onwards and SE21 will also feature some of the most exciting contemporary glass and ceramics makers working in the UK.

In addition, there will be a glassblowing demonstration by Allister Malcolm, resident glass artist at Broadfield House Glass Museum, and for ceramics enthusiasts and anyone wanting to learn more about how it's done, a demonstration by potter Richard Baxter of Old Leigh Studios in Essex.

Refreshments will be available from Ned’s Café and the venue has ample free parking. The venue is well connected by both the bus and rail networks with West Dulwich station nearby.

The cards feature messages congratulating victims of abuse, those diagnosed with illnesses such as AIDS or breast cancer, or who have children will special needs such as Downs Syndrome.

To say the cards are in poor taste is an under-statement. They probably also breach ETSY's own rules, but ETSY's attention needs to be drawn to the problem. The unhappy members (and yes, I'm amongst them!) have a Facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=155532017830886 for anyone on Facebook who wants to add their support to the cause; and have created an online e-petition calling for everyone to boycott ETSY marketplace whilst the offending seller is allowed to sell these cards. You can find the petition here:
