Gift Idea: Glass website subscriptions

Christmas is coming and we're all wondering what to buy for Christmas... some of us have friends who really enjoy the research side of glass collecting, so how about buying them a gift subscription to one of Frank Andrew's amazing glass websites?

Frank runs the Glass Zoo, where he collects info and photos of all sorts of animals and figures made from glass; and he also runs the Glass Study, where he is digitising and sharing a huge amount of material from his own and other collections. The material includes catalogues, articles, advertisements and much much more and a subscription gives you unlimited access for the period of the subscription.

Subscriptions for the Glass Zoo are just €10 for 2 years, whilst the Glass Study is a little more at €30 per year, but both are far outweighed by access to some of the most amazing glass information available online.

And the collection is growing all the time, so you actually get more for your money as the year passes... you can't say the same about a box of chocolates now, can you?!

Supporting Burton Memorial Hall's project Kosy Komfy Kidz in the Jubilee People's Millions

http://www.peoplesmillions.org.uk/2011-finalists/border/kosy-komfy-kidz

I'm making a plea for help! Help Burton Memorial Hall in Burton-in-Kendal, south Cumbria, is 1 of the final 6 projects in the 2011 Jubilee People's Millions contest in the Border TV region. The contest will be determined by public telephone vote on Tuesday 28 June 2011 (a bit like X-Factor for community groups!) and the Hall is going head to head with another project in the north west of Cumbria - and the project with the most telephone votes on the day will win.

The Hall (which is a registered charity and raises all its own revenue from room rentals and fundraising events) needs a lot of work doing to it: building a new toilet block for very small kids who currently can't reach the adult loos or washbasins, replacing the cracked concrete play surface with some jolly coloured softer surfacing, replacing the heating boiler that is so old (and unreliable) that no-one can remember when it was installed!, and installing better lights so our table tennis teams can compete properly to national competition standards and our drama and music groups can have some stage lighting instead of striplights! The total cost is just shy of £100,000 of work needed for this phase of restoration of our old but much-loved and well-used village hall - we're hoping to win the vote on the night for £60,000 from the Jubilee People's Millions fund (the rest comes from Hall reserves and a legacy of £20,000 left us by one of the Hall's founders.)

I'm asking for the support for the Hall's entry Kosy Komfy Kidz by voting for us on the day and by spreading the word through your contacts and networks to ask for others to support them too. All it takes is one call any-time between 9am and 12 midnight on Tuesday 28 June at a cost of 11p per call (BT landline rate) to the number which will be published on our JPM web-page: http://www.peoplesmillions.org.uk/2011-finalists/border/kosy-komfy-kidz and in the Daily Mirror on Tuesday 28 June 2011. Every vote for the project will be vital and anyone can vote (up to 10 times from the same number if you'd like to! girl cheer but just one vote would help!!!), you don't need to be local to south Cumbria or even the Border TV area in order to vote. I'll add the number here too as soon as I have it on Tuesday morning.

The Hall is vital to the village of Burton-in-Kendal, it really is a community hub and is busy every day of the week with activities for all ages and interests, but Burton is only a small community so if you can help us along by voting just once on the day you would be doing us a great service and earn the gratitude of all those involved in the project. Please help us if you can and spread the word to anyone and everyone who might help us also. Thank you!

SE21 the Glass and Ceramics Fair Sunday 3rd April 2011

Text below copied from website to help promote the event:

SE21 (the Glass and Ceramics Fair) is to be held at Dulwich College, Dulwich Common, London in the light-filled modernist setting of the Christison Hall on Sunday 3rd April 2011.

This event represents a new concept in specialist fairs, bringing together antique and contemporary glass with ceramics from both the secondary market and directly from the artists themselves.

With a balanced mix of both disciplines, and with the emphasis on quality and design, SE21 will be the destination of choice for those interested in sourcing unusual and desirable items to complete their décor and collections.

Visitors will be able to browse all types of decorative and collectable glass and ceramics; from Powell to Poole, Mdina to Moorcroft and Lalique to Fat Lava.

You will find glass specialists exhibiting 18th century drinking glasses, stylish Scandinavian, Italian and British art glass, as well as antique continental glass by makers such as Gallé and Lalique. Ceramics will be well represented by trusted quality experts, offering items from the 18th century onwards and SE21 will also feature some of the most exciting contemporary glass and ceramics makers working in the UK.

In addition, there will be a glassblowing demonstration by Allister Malcolm, resident glass artist at Broadfield House Glass Museum, and for ceramics enthusiasts and anyone wanting to learn more about how it's done, a demonstration by potter Richard Baxter of Old Leigh Studios in Essex.

Refreshments will be available from Ned’s Café and the venue has ample free parking. The venue is well connected by both the bus and rail networks with West Dulwich station nearby.

Cards in poor taste

ETSY, the online hand-made craft market place, is under attack from members who are understandably upset at cards offered for sale by one member there. The cards feature messages congratulating victims of abuse, those diagnosed with illnesses such as AIDS or breast cancer, or who have children will special needs such as Downs Syndrome.

To say the cards are in poor taste is an under-statement. They probably also breach ETSY's own rules, but ETSY's attention needs to be drawn to the problem. The unhappy members (and yes, I'm amongst them!) have a Facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=155532017830886 for anyone on Facebook who wants to add their support to the cause; and have created an online e-petition calling for everyone to boycott ETSY marketplace whilst the offending seller is allowed to sell these cards. You can find the petition here:
http://www.change.org/petitions/view/tell_etsy_to_remove_rape_congratulations_cards_from_website# Please sign it and support the campaign.
